OP-17 Follow-Up: The Drop Is Here — Time to Make Some Entries | TCJournal

Back on August 31, just days after OP-17 hit shelves, we published our Future OP-17 Single Pickups: Waiting For the Drop watchlist. Streams were flooded with pack openings, prices were running hot, a…

First, some context on why prices have softened the way they have. It is widely believed that OP-17 received a larger print run than previous sets, and both sealed and single prices reflect that extra supply. On top of that, there is still an additional wave of OP-17 product scheduled for the end of the year, which means more boxes cracked and more copies hitting the market. Could prices dip a little further? Absolutely. But history has shown that cards tend to find a floor they hold regardless of how much supply is out there, because collectors and players keep absorbing copies at a certain price. We are not trying to time the absolute bottom. At current levels, many of these cards are at least good enough to start building positions, and leaving room to add more if that end-of-year wave pushes them lower.

The headline of this follow-up is the Kaido (062) Super Alternate Art . After opening around $350, it has finally broken into the sub-$200 territory we were waiting for, with Near Mint copies currently listed around $185. This card has already earned a reputation in the community as the "Baki" Kaido, thanks to its artwork by Keisuke Itagaki, the creator of the Baki the Grappler series. Kaido as a character remains underappreciated, but we believe the Baki crossover status, combined with being a top chase in a set this hyped, will make it a memorable piece for years to come. Then factor in the rarity: as a Super Alternate Art, its estimated pull rate sits around one copy every two to four cases. With booster boxes running roughly $300, opening two full cases costs over $7,200, and even that does not guarantee a pull. Next to that math, $185 for a guaranteed copy looks very appealing.

The Monkey.D.Luffy (093) Alternate Art is the one that has not come down to meet us. We were hoping for an entry closer to $20, but the card has held firm around $30. That is still well below its opening-day listings in the $50s, but Luffy's popularity and the strength of this Elbaph-era artwork are clearly doing a lot of work to keep demand steady. This is a pick we recommend continuing to wait on. If the end-of-year wave adds enough supply to push it toward the low $20s, we will revisit it. Until then, we are comfortable sitting on our hands.

The Kaido (063) Alternate Art has entered our entry zone at around $8, down from its $18 opening. That is not a bad price for a Kaido alt art, and our view that Kaido is undervalued has not changed. That said, we will be honest: with the broader One Piece singles market in a downturn, there are probably better pickups available among similar Alternate Art Super Rares right now, so this one is not high on our priority list. If you are hunting for low-priced singles with upside, check out our previous Hidden Gems reports and the Hidden Gems Collective pages at tcjournal.io .

The regular Monkey.D.Luffy (093) Super Rare has genuinely surprised us. For a standard Super Rare, it has been remarkably stubborn, only dropping from about $5 at release to around $2.50 today. That resilience is impressive when you consider the volume: over 9,400 copies have sold on TCGplayer, and more than 1,000 listings are still available. Even so, it has not reached our under-$1 entry target. We may adjust our target if it gets close to the $1 mark, but at $2.50 it is still too expensive for a regular Super Rare that will keep getting pulled through the next wave.

The special DON!! cards are also worth a look. The DON!! Card Alternate Art Rocks Special Foil is currently sitting around $42. It spiked fast during the first week of release before quickly consolidating, and it has been relatively stable since. The DON!! Card Alternate Art Luffy and Loki Gold has gone the other direction, climbing to around $28. Even more interesting, there are fewer than 70 Near Mint copies currently listed in TCGplayer's inventory. We originally expected the DON!! cards to drop the most, so this tight supply is something we will be keeping a close eye on.

Beyond our original watchlist, a few more opportunities stand out. There are some notable SP rares trading under $200, including the Marshall.D.Teach (ST27-005) SP at around $168 and the Buggy (P-084) SP at around $160. That is not bad at all for SP-rarity Emperors, especially next to the Monkey.D.Luffy (ST31-004) SP at around $570. On the sealed side, The World's Strongest Warriors Sleeved Booster Packs are a great pickup at only $13. Sleeved boosters have a strong long-term track record, and you only need to look back at earlier anniversary sets for proof: OP-05 Awakening of the New Era Sleeved Booster Packs now sell for over $80.

Overall, if you were looking to jump into OP-17, now is a great time to make some well-placed entries. The larger print run and the upcoming end-of-year wave may still nudge some prices lower, so there is no need to go all in at once. Start small, leave room to add, and remember our golden rule: your buy-in price dictates your future return, and if a card never reaches your target, there will always be another set.
