Lorcana’s Fabled Future: Boom or Bust? | TCJournal

Is Disney Lorcana already running out of magic, or is a massive resurgence just around the corner? While juggernauts like Pokémon and One Piece dominate the market, Ravensburger’s TCG has been quietl…

When Disney Lorcana first dropped its inaugural set, The First Chapter , in the fall of 2023, it immediately looked like a true heavyweight contender for the top TCG spotlight. The initial buy-in and subsequent price rise seemed like a complete no-brainer for collectors and investors alike. Combining Disney's universally recognized, massive IP with the explosive, unprecedented growth we were seeing across the entire TCG space made it feel like the easiest portfolio addition of the decade.

However, the honeymoon phase didn't last forever. Ravensburger has executed multiple reprints of its flagship set—even leading up to our current timeline—effectively dragging The First Chapter down from its dizzying highs of around $500 per booster box. Thanks to this most recent reprint wave, a box is currently sitting at a respectable, yet significantly lowered, $290 per booster box . With so much sealed supply locked away off the open market and the constant threat of Ravensburger firing up the printers whenever they wish, collectors are rightfully nervous about this shaky, unsteady TCG base.

Zoom out, and the picture becomes even more precarious for your investment portfolio. Almost all other Lorcana booster boxes currently sit well below MSRP , with sets like Into the Inklands hovering around $72 and Ursula's Return languishing at about $75. This is undeniably a bad look for a premier IP trying to survive in one of the hottest TCG markets ever. Add in fierce competition from rising new players like the Riftbound and Gundam TCGs, alongside the established dominance of our mainstays Pokémon and One Piece, and it's easy to see how Disney Lorcana keeps slipping lower on the leaderboards.

But don't count the House of Mouse out just yet, because there is one set defying all expectations. Released fairly recently last year, the Fabled set has emerged as one of Disney Lorcana’s undisputed champions. Sitting at an impressive $245 per booster box , this set proves the game still has massive surprises in store. The crown jewel? An absolutely stunning chase card— Mickey Mouse - Brave Little Prince —that is currently commanding a jaw-dropping $1,500 premium on the secondary market.

That $1,500 Mickey isn't carrying the set's expected value all by himself, either. Following closely behind as the #2 chase is the Minnie Mouse - Sweetheart Princess pulling in a massive $800 , and the #3 Winnie the Pooh - Honey Wizard sitting strong at $300 . When you calculate the top 10 value of the set, it totals an astounding $3,500 . In today's highly competitive market, that kind of top-heavy value is incredibly impressive for any trading card game to achieve.

It is abundantly clear that Disney and Ravensburger pulled out all the stops for Fabled . By front-loading the set with beautifully illustrated, undeniably fan-favorite Disney characters, they tapped directly into the core nostalgia that makes this IP so potent. This release proves that the deep, emotional fan and collector appeal is still very much alive and well, ensuring the set remains heavily desired.

As Disney Lorcana edges closer to the critical 3rd-year checkpoint, the market is left wondering if it can mount a full comeback as a major contender. Currently, even with the success of Fabled , they are lagging behind others, but if Ravensburger can get its printing strategy figured out, they aren't out yet. The biggest collector fear currently is the reprinting of this set. If The First Chapter is constantly reprinted, and the new "winning" set gets reprinted too, it leaves subsequent releases feeling undesirable. If we had to guess based on past performance, Fabled could very well be next to get a massive reprint, a move that would aggressively shake up the current values of the cards we just highlighted.

While a reprint seems likely, we shouldn't forget the ultimate trump card: Disney's IP has been around longer than any of its competitors, making it a cultural powerhouse all on its own. Even though their TCG tenure is brief, the sheer amount of untapped potential is staggering. Speculation is already running wild that Disney could integrate mammoth franchises like Star Wars , Marvel , and more into the game at any given moment. Only time will tell, but in my opinion, Disney is almost too big to fail .
