Frozen in Place: Inside Lorcana’s Market Consolidation | TCJournal

The trading card game market is buzzing as Lorcana explodes! After years of sets hovering around $100/box, the First Chapter premium tax and Fabled reignited the game with an iconic new rarity and el…

Let's dig into the numbers and recent headlines dominating the secondary market. Wilds Unknown , one of the newest sets containing the iconic Buzz Lightyear, was one of the first modern Lorcana boxes to break the $200 barrier . It looked like it was on its way to $300, but it simply couldn't break past that resistance level and has currently settled back down to around $220.

Similarly, Winterspell broke the $200 barrier soon after the Wilds Unknown buzz, but it has stubbornly settled below the $200 price point since the initial excitement faded. Even Whispers in the Well was tracking heavily to break the $200 barrier, but it did not cross the line and is now settling in the $160 area. These sets are incredibly important to look at because they all came after Fabled and include the coveted iconic rarity type in each set.

When we look closer at the actual sales data, however, volume is the undeniable key. The daily volume paints a very different picture than the flashy price tags, with Whispers in the Well moving around 9 booster boxes daily and Wilds Unknown trading around 10 boxes, settling at $160 and $220 respectively. Winterspell sees even less movement at just 5 boxes a day, cementing its sub-$200 price point. All of this is impressive volume for a growing game, but when compared to the massive daily liquidity of other heavyweight TCGs, this volume can be severely lacking.

On the flip side, other low-cost booster boxes like Ursula's Return and Into the Inklands are still languishing in the sub-$100 range. To be fair though, these are probably the two most lackluster sets of the Lorcana TCG. Jaw-dropping singles prices have been the major catalyst for newsworthy headlines, but the actual volume of these massive sales is comparatively low. This has me personally skeptical about the validity of these prices; we know there could be market manipulation, and $5,000+ for a Buzz Lightyear card seems extreme to me.

These are just some thoughts, Lorcana could either be slowing down and not a hype bull run continuation for the TCG, unlike the One Piece TCG that has impressively continued its continuous growth since last year's massive bull run. Without the sustained demand and volume to back up the jump in booster box and singles prices, the current hype could simply fizzle out. Maybe everyday collectors just don't want to pay $200+ for a Disney booster box.

The counter argument, however, could be incredibly enticing as well. Even though there is a lower volume in sales, this could be the natural consolidation period for Lorcana to have its next massive leg up. If you look at booster box supply, it is steadily getting taken off the open market. Winterspell , for example, is a more modern Lorcana set but has less than 50 booster boxes available on TCGplayer. When the supply drops further, the current sellers will inevitably start raising prices, and if buyers are there to meet the new demand, there could absolutely be another explosive surge.

So what to do? That's entirely up to you! Lorcana is still in a fascinating sweet spot right now. If you're interested, you can pick up incredibly strong post- Fabled sets for less than $200 that still offer the chance at massive 4-figure hits. If you're not as hopeful, you can still purchase sub-$100 booster boxes from earlier, though less desirable, sets. Sealed product still offers great long-term value for those wanting to be in the Lorcana scene, and if you're not interested in Lorcana anyways, no harm, no foul! As most investors thought Lorcana would instantly match the demand of other popular TCGs like One Piece with $400+ booster boxes or Pokémon, Lorcana seems to have instead hit a healthy consolidation period.
